Drury University’s Sunderland Lyceum The renovation of the university library’s upper level transformed 26,000 square feet into a modern, functional space. At its core, 2,100 square feet were converted into an enclosed Lyceum designed for debates and presentations. The project also included new flooring throughout, restroom refinishing, and a full paint refresh to enhance the aesthetic and atmosphere.

BUF’s design balanced contemporary style with functionality, incorporating a refined color palette, strategic zoning, and soft furnishings to create an inviting and well-lit environment. Inspired by Drury’s school colors, gray carpets with red accents improved acoustics, while wood flooring delineated distinct areas. Vibrant red highlights emphasized classroom and technology walls, reinforcing energy and focus.

Using a streamlined design/build approach, BUF collaborated closely with the client, contractor, furniture designer, and flooring representative to expedite the process. This efficient coordination allowed construction to begin within months and finish in time for the Fall semester, minimizing academic disruption.

The renovation was a resounding success, with the Lyceum now serving as a vibrant hub for debates, presentations, and community events, fulfilling its intended purpose and fostering engagement and intellectual exchange.
